Kotok: Stocks Rally on Trump Victory with Eye on Tariffs, Tax Cuts, Budget Deficit

Cumberland Advisors CIO Says Selloff in Credit Markets Shows Investors Worried about How Trump, Congress Deal with Rising "Fiscal Dominance"
1

For more than half a century David Kotok has been the Chief Investment officer at Cumberland Advisors, the company he co-founded in 1973. As such, he has led successful money management teams for more than 50 years, and distinguished his work with in-depth research not only on investments but also by digging deep into U.S. political economy, geopolitics and history.

So on an historic day, when Donald Trump became the first Republican presidential candidate in 20 years to win the popular vote, I eagerly asked David for his views on what drove the markets’ response to this victory and how he expects the president-elect to deal with key issues like the nation’s growing fiscal deficit, his plan to use tariffs to boost revenues and increase foreign direct investment in the U.S., and more.

David is also a prolific writer who is on the verge of releasing his latest book, “The Fed and The Flu,” which covers 3500 years of pandemic history and how governments’ policy reactions have been instrumental in determining how quickly and successfully their nations’ emerged from them. He shares one specific lesson learned from his research that applies to where the U.S. economy is now and could be useful to Trump and his team as they take the reins of power.

So sit back, dive in and see hear what David has to say. He cannot say what Trump will do; he can say what the thinks Trump should do and why it is important to investors.
